Safespan Products Speed Reconstruction Of The Niagara Falls Observation Tower

Observation Tower
Niagara Falls, NY
Tonawanda, New York / 13 November 2001  -  Both of Safespan, Inc.'s access products are being used by the contractors reconstructing the famous observation tower next to the American Falls in Niagara Falls, New York. The company has deployed thousands of meters of its Plus Eight® Modular Scaffolding System to provide the support for encapsulation and shielding to protect workers on the tower from the elements during the harsh winter construction season. In addition, 1,027 m2 (11,050 ft2) of Safespan's Multi-Span Bridge Platform System® is furnishing secure access to the underside of the tower's observation decks that are undergoing major rehabilitation. The company custom engineered and installed the combined access system on a turnkey basis.

The 180-foot (55 m)-tall steel structure provides not only a magnificent view of the entire bi-national attraction from its deck, but also elevator access to the U.S. dock for the historic Maid of The Mist tours that travel to the foot of the Canadian Falls.

The Niagara Region is subject to 100-inch (2.5+ m) average snowfall each year, but the gorge has its own microclimate, generally making conditions worse than in the surrounding communities. The shrink-wrapped Safespan scaffold and platform system has already provided protection for workers from 50+ knot winds. Spray from the falls is expected to coat much or all of the structure with ice once the winter season begins, adding to the stress on the scaffolding. The fast-track reconstruction project is to be completed by April 2002.

New York, NY / 10 August 2001 -- Safespan is installing 270,000 sq. ft. of its cable-suspended Multi-Span Bridge Platform System® to provide safe, secure support for the Koch Skanska crews rehabilitating the Manhattan Bridge. This toll-free East River crossing is 6,855 feet (2,089m) long and has seven lanes of vehicular traffic plus four rapid transit tracks. The Manhattan Bridge was the first suspension bridge to be designed using deflection theory. It has four cables, each supporting a stiffening truss, and has spans of 725, 1470, and 725 feet. It is a major metropolitan artery with dense vehicular traffic. In addition, 276 trains cross each track on its north-side every weekday; while 135 trains per day cross in each direction on its south-side tracks. The Bridge Access Revolution Arrives in Europe

Tonawanda, New York / 23 April 2001 - The Safespan Multi-Span Bridge Platform System® is set to revolutionize the European bridge painting and rehabilitation marketplace, as it has in the U.S.A. for the past six years. Tonawanda, New York-based Safespan, Inc., has appointed the Turner Group of Companies in Glasgow, Scotland as the exclusive source for its patented cable-suspended platform and shielding technology throughout Europe. Turner, which is well-known for its highly efficient Plus Eight® scaffolding systems, will serve the bridge rehabilitation market through its newly-formed company, Safespan Europe Ltd.

Safespan Europe will supply the Safespan Multi-Span BridgePlatform System® primarily on a installed basis, employing the well-accepted turnkey technique that has proven so successful in the United States. The British Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently assessed Safespan® platforms for use in the United Kingdom and found that, in addition to being fire resistant, they meet all of its other technical objectives. Safespan Europe intends to use HSE-registered and Safespan-approved installers to execute all its European contracts.

After the introductory stage is completed, it should only be a matter of time until the unique Safespan® system becomes the primary form of structural access for bridge painting refurbishment throughout the U.K. and the rest of Europe.
